DBN Gogo Explains Why She Pivoted From Just Dj’ing To Making Music. As DBN Gogo continues to make waves on the Amapiano scene, her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists, emphasizing the significance of evolution and creativity. By stepping out of her comfort zone and embracing making her own music.

DBN Gogo recently revealed how her journey from just DJing to making music was not a predetermined path. In fact, when she first started, she never thought about creating her own music. Her initial focus was on DJing, particularly playing nostalgic and old-school tunes that resonated with her audience. “At the beginning, I didn’t think about making music at all. Even the genre I started playing in was mainly old school, so the whole basis of my set was playing nostalgic music—it’s like you can’t really go back in time,” DBN Gogo said in a recent interview on the The Dadaboy Podcast.

As DBN Gogo’s career progressed, she recognized the need to expand her horizons and evolve as an artist. In the music industry, especially in South Africa, where the industry is relatively small, there comes a point where DJing alone may not be enough to sustain growth. “I think at a certain point in your career, depending on your trajectory, you do have to make music. Our industry is quite small in South Africa, you hit a plateau at some point if you’re not making music,” she explained.

DBN Gogo realized that producing music would not only help her advance her career but also open up new income streams. In an industry where the number of available gigs is limited, being able to create and release original music can be a game-changer. The COVID-19 pandemic played a significant role in DBN Gogo’s decision to start making music. During the lockdowns and restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the virus, many artists found themselves with ample time to explore their creative sides. DBN Gogo seized this opportunity and used the downtime to delve into music production.

“There’s only so many places you can gig at, only so much you can charge if you’re not doing more. You have to advance and do more things. Also making music opens up more income streams. I think COVID-19 was one of the indicators of that because I made a bulk of my music during Covid,” she stated.

With the release of her own tracks, DBN Gogo quickly gained recognition and acclaim. Her Amapiano productions, infused with infectious beats and soulful melodies, captivated listeners across South Africa and beyond. By venturing into music production, she not only expanded her artistic range but also established herself as a multifaceted artist in the industry.
