Mpura Honoured with a Stunning Tombstone Makeover

Nearly four years after his untimely passing, Amapiano pioneer Mpura, real name Mongezi Thomas Stuurman, has been honoured with a newly upgraded tombstone — a dignified tribute fit for the legend he was. The final resting place of the beloved artist has been transformed into a memorial that now reflects the profound legacy he left behind in South African music.

Mpura tragically passed away in a car accident in August 2021, alongside fellow star Killer Kau and three others, while en route to a performance. Their sudden and heartbreaking deaths sent shockwaves through the country and left a deep void in the Amapiano community.

Now, nearly four years after he was laid to rest on 17 August 2021, Mpura’s gravesite has received a stunning facelift thanks to renowned granite art specialist Oscar Dlamini of Manyano Memorials. Dlamini, who specializes in creating bespoke tombstones with artistic flair, worked closely with Mpura’s family to ensure the upgrade captured both the artist’s legacy and the man behind the music.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Dlamini shared:

“The family wanted something more dignified, something that truly represented who Mpura was — not only as a musician but as a person. It was an honour to be part of this.”

The new tombstone, featuring granite artistry and personalized details, now stands as a powerful tribute to the hitmaker best known for anthems like “Umsebenzi Wethu” and his unmatched contribution to the rise of Amapiano. It immortalizes Mpura’s joyful energy, distinctive style, and the musical imprint he left on a generation.

Fellow Amapiano star Lady Du, who was a close friend and collaborator, previously paid tribute to Mpura and Killer Kau through heartfelt performances and public messages. The artist has always been vocal about preserving the memories of those who helped shape the genre.

Mpura may be gone, but the newly unveiled memorial is a reminder that his spirit lives on — not just in the hearts of fans, but in the rhythm of every Amapiano beat that moves the streets.

His upgraded tombstone stands tall as a symbol of reverence, remembrance, and the timeless power of music.
