Six years ago, two musical masterminds took a leap of faith — a dusty road trip to Durban, a shared belief in a sound still finding its shape, and an idea that would soon reshape an entire genre. That idea became Scorpion Kings, an album that not only introduced Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa as a formidable duo, but ignited a movement that would launch countless careers and carry Amapiano from South African dancefloors to the world stage.
Now, in a full-circle moment, the Scorpion Kings return to Durban for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July, celebrating a historic milestone: over 90 million combined audio and video streams for the original Scorpion Kings album.
“That album wasn’t just music — that was the beginning of a movement,” reflects DJ Maphorisa.
“We had no idea, driving to Durban that day, just how much our lives — and the whole game — were about to change.”
Released in 2019, Scorpion Kings wasn’t just a collaboration — it was a cultural shift. The project married Kabza’s soulful, jazz-infused chords with Phori’s global ear and storytelling touch, delivering an experience that felt both proudly local and undeniably future-facing. What followed was a new era for South African music, as Amapiano exploded across borders, playlists, and continents — always carrying echoes of that first album.
“We believed in the sound, and the people believed in us,” says Kabza De Small. “We’ll never forget where it all began.”
This weekend, Durban once again becomes the backdrop to history. The Kings are celebrating their journey with performances across the city, reconnecting with fans and marking the moment with the energy that only Amapiano can deliver.
But they’re not stopping here.
All eyes now turn to 29 August 2025, when Scorpion Kings Live with Friends takes over Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Billed as Amapiano’s biggest stage to date, the show is expected to be a landmark celebration of the genre’s rise — and a tribute to the visionaries who helped lead it.
From humble beginnings to a 90-million-stream legacy, Kabza and Phori continue to shape the sound of a generation. As they remind us with every drop, performance, and headline: this isn’t just music — it’s a movement.
Join the celebration this weekend in Durban, and witness the next chapter unfold at Loftus in August. The Kings are far from done.
