Amapiano artist Scotts Maphuma is once again trending for all the wrong reasons after a video surfaced of him seemingly forcing a smile while being serenaded by school children. The video, which went viral on social media platforms Sunday evening, has reignited debate about the musician’s recent public relations troubles.

The clip, shared by a popular X (Twitter) user, shows Scotts Maphuma at a petrol station, where he encounters a group of enthusiastic school kids singing one of his songs. Instead of engaging warmly, Maphuma appears visibly uncomfortable and unenthusiastic. Though he eventually offers a half-hearted smile, many online users have interpreted it as “forced” and disconnected.

The X user who posted the video captioned it: “People really humbled Scotts Maphuma, now he looks like he’s forcing it.” The post quickly gained traction, with thousands of views and hundreds of comments. Some users poked fun at the awkward moment, while others saw it as a reflection of the artist’s ongoing image rehabilitation campaign.

Scotts Maphuma has been under fire ever since a controversial interview on L-Tido’s podcast, where he made dismissive remarks about his fans. In the interview, Maphuma stated that he didn’t owe anyone photos or interactions, implying that his success did not depend on fan engagement. The comments sparked outrage, with many fans threatening to boycott his music and performances.

Although Maphuma issued a public apology on social media shortly after the backlash, the damage to his reputation appears to be lingering. Critics argue that his recent attempts at public interaction feel insincere and performative, as shown in the now-viral video.

“He is forcing it vele, fake smile. it doesn’t come from deep u can see it,” one user wrote. “Definitely forcing it, he looks annoyed 😂.”

However, some fans defended the artist, suggesting that the pressure to constantly be cheerful and perform for fans can be overwhelming, especially when under scrutiny.

Regardless of public opinion, it’s clear that Scotts Maphuma has a long road ahead to fully win back the hearts of his supporters. As social media keeps a close watch, every move he makes is being judged — and this latest incident proves that Mzansi is not quite ready to forget.
