Amapiano sensation Mawhoo, born Thandeka Nontobeko Ngema, has opened up about the deep emotional roots behind her hit single Uzizwa Kanjan. While many listeners assume the song speaks about heartbreak from romantic relationships, the 30-year-old artist revealed that it is, in fact, a heartfelt message to her absent father.
In a candid interview with Daily Sun, Mawhoo shared that she was raised solely by her mother and has never had a relationship with her father. “It’s not only about being heartbroken from a relationship, but also about being raised without a father,” she explained. “That pain of saying I’m here today and I was only raised by my mum and things are happening.”
The Bonga hitmaker said the emotional weight of the song reflects her journey of growing up without a paternal figure and the silent questions she has carried throughout her life. Despite the pain, she expressed deep gratitude for the support her song has received from fans across the country.
“To the people who support us, I’m grateful for that,” she said. Mawhoo also confessed that she often gets emotional when thinking about the success of Uzizwa Kanjan, a track she prayed for at the beginning of the year. “When the year started, I prayed and asked God for a beautiful song. I know that I’m not perfect and this industry has a lot of competition, but just give me a nice song and I want to be on number one,” she said.
Her prayer was answered in ways she could hardly believe. “I wasn’t sure that He will listen to me but when it happened, I was so excited,” she said, reflecting on the overwhelming response to the track. Mawhoo also shared her gratitude publicly on Instagram, thanking God for hearing her prayer.
Looking ahead, the singer is ready to follow up her emotional hit with another release. “I’m dropping my single on the 13th of June, Bengicela. It’s a prayer song. It’s very nice,” she teased.
