Amapiano powerhouse Lady Du is channeling her grief into creativity following the heartbreaking loss of her father, legendary kwaito artist DJ Choc Mgwenya. The beloved musician passed away on Friday, 11 April 2025, leaving a void in the music community and in the heart of his daughter. But Lady Du is proving once again why she is one of South Africa’s most resilient and inspiring artists.

Just weeks after her father’s passing, Lady Du gave fans a powerful reminder of her strength and artistry by returning to the studio. Taking to social media, the 34-year-old shared two heartfelt videos of herself recording vocals — rapping and singing with raw emotion while seated behind a recording deck.

In the first video, Lady Du taps into a soulful and vulnerable side, singing over mellow instrumentals with stirring lyrics that many fans believe are inspired by her recent loss. In the second clip, she switches gears to a more upbeat tempo, blending her trademark amapiano energy with confident rhymes — a glimpse of the creative fire fans have come to love.

” This reminded me of the Covid days 😭😭😭 same sound. Back in studio full time,” she captioned one of her posts, earning waves of support from fans and fellow artists alike.

Her return to music comes shortly after she received high praise from Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who dubbed her the “boss of bosses” for her outstanding live performance at a recent cultural dinner attended by diplomats and AU representatives.

Fans were quick to react to her return, flooding the comment section with encouraging words and excitement about what’s coming next.

As she continues to work through her grief, fans are ready to rally behind her, eagerly awaiting her next release.
