Amapiano rising star Bassie has officially cemented her place among South Africa’s musical elite after a triumphant night at the Metro FM Music Awards, held on Saturday, 3 May, at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga. The 22-year-old singer and songwriter, born Basetsana Maluleke, walked away with three prestigious awards, making her one of the biggest winners of the night.
Bassie scooped Best Amapiano Song, Best Collaboration, and Best Music Video for her widely loved track “Kwelanga 2.0” featuring TmanXpress and Leemckrazy. The emotional and infectious tune has been dominating airwaves, club scenes, and streaming platforms since its release.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Bassie described the experience as surreal:
“This means I’m a boss! It shows that I’m on the right path. I’m now a multi-award-winning artist. I’m amazed, excited, and just grateful. It validates everything I’ve been working towards.”
While riding high on her success, Bassie is also juggling a demanding academic life. She’s a full-time student at the University of the Free State, where she’s studying toward a Bachelor of Education. Despite her tight schedule, she’s committed to both her studies and her career.
“Honestly, I’m not really managing. I’m still trying to find my balance,” she admitted. “Right now, I just fly to Joburg for gigs and back to Bloem for classes. That’s my life for now.”
Beyond the glitz and glamour, Bassie carries a strong message for her peers and fellow young artists.
“We’re growing. We’re evolving, and the music is real,” she said. “The people who won this year, their music isn’t just trending. It’s timeless. I believe that five years from now, we’ll still be listening to Mawelele, Naledi, and Kwelanga. It’s pure, quality music that connects with people.”
Bassie’s triple win is not just a personal victory — it’s a signal that a new generation of Amapiano artists is stepping confidently into the spotlight. With humility, determination, and a powerful voice, Bassie is ready to take her music to the world.
“This is just the beginning. I’m learning, growing, and ready for more.”
