Amapiano breakout star Scotts Maphuma has once again stirred debate on social media — this time, for opening up about why he often refuses to pose for pictures with fans.
The Uyaphapha Marn hitmaker sat down with L-Tido on the L-Tido Podcast, which aired on YouTube on Wednesday, 23 April 2025. In the candid interview, Scotts addressed his often-criticized behaviour when it comes to fan interactions in public, especially regarding his reluctance to take photos.
“I’m an introvert, but I can be an extrovert. Like I’m an automatic — I’m a DSG gearbox,” Scotts explained. “That’s why I have a problem with pictures and videos, because now I want my space.”
His comments come after he previously made headlines for publicly pleading with Mzansi to cancel him, claiming that fame had become overwhelming and was robbing him of his privacy. His latest comments have reignited the conversation, with some social media users calling him arrogant, while others defended his need for personal boundaries.
The rising star likened making music to owning a shop, arguing that just as no one forces consumers to buy from a store, no artist should be forced to engage beyond their comfort. “Music is like a shop. It’s the same as stocking your fruits and vegetables and placing them there. Then you wait for consumers to purchase. So, I didn’t force you, and people didn’t force me to make music,” he said. “If I don’t want to take a picture, then I don’t want to.”
Perhaps the most controversial part of his interview was his claim that he does not owe his success to fans:
“I don’t think I owe it to them. I don’t think any celebrity owes anyone. This is the world, my brother. I live according to God. No one made me reach the point I’m at today. And no one can remove me from the point I’m at today.”
As expected, Scotts’ comments divided Mzansi, with many debating whether artists should be obligated to engage with fans or be allowed to set their own boundaries.
Regardless of public opinion, Scotts Maphuma continues to make waves in the Amapiano scene — and clearly, he’s doing it on his own terms.
