South African Amapiano sensation Lady Du, born Duduzile Ngwenya, is mourning the devastating loss of her father, legendary DJ and music pioneer Mbuyiselo “DJ Choc” Ngwenya. The veteran artist passed away on Friday, 11 April, at the age of 51, leaving the South African music industry and fans heartbroken.

Lady Du confirmed the tragic news on Saturday, 12 April, via her Instagram page, where she shared an emotional statement honoring her father’s legacy.

“It is with deep sorrow and immense respect that we confirm the passing of South African music legend, DJ Choc Ngwenya,” she wrote. “A pioneer, a storyteller, a pillar of the music community—his influence stretched across generations and genres.”

DJ Choc was a highly respected figure in South Africa’s music scene, known for his immense contributions to house music and mentorship of countless artists. His work laid the foundation for many of today’s chart-topping talents, including his daughter, Lady Du, who followed in his footsteps to become one of the most recognizable voices in Amapiano.

The loss comes just under two years after Lady Du tragically lost her brother, Thabiso Ngwenya, in July 2023, making this an especially heartbreaking time for the singer and her family.

Following the announcement, fans, fellow musicians, and industry colleagues took to social media to express their condolences and share memories of DJ Choc. Tributes poured in across platforms, with many reflecting on his talent, humility, and the impact he made in shaping the sound of modern South African music.

Lady Du, who has always been open about her deep bond with her father, thanked fans and supporters for their outpouring of love and support. She also asked the public and media for privacy as her family navigates this difficult time of mourning.

“Thank you to everyone who has shown love, sent prayers, and stood by our family during this time. We humbly ask for privacy as we grieve,” she wrote.

As the music world reflects on DJ Choc’s extraordinary life and legacy, it’s clear that his influence will continue to live on—not only through his iconic discography but also through the legacy carried forward by his daughter.
