Bassie Opens Up About the Struggles of Not Being Recognized by Face

Despite her growing success in the Amapiano scene, songstress Bassie admits she still struggles with public recognition. While her hit songs like Kwelanga, Izenzo, and Sizani have become anthems, the 22-year-old singer, whose real name is Basetsana Maluleke, says most people don’t recognize her until she starts singing.

Speaking at the 2025 Metro FM Music Awards media launch in Mbombela, the Mpumalanga-born singer revealed her frustration over her lack of facial recognition.

“It’s been tough trying to get people to know me and who I am. Usually, people recognize me as soon as I sing Kwelanga or one of my other popular songs. I could get on stage, and the minute I sing a note, people immediately say: ‘Oh, it’s her!’ … which really stings,” she said.

Bassie explained that she often goes unnoticed when traveling, blending in with the crowd.

“I usually take the bus when I go somewhere, and funny enough, people don’t realize they are sitting next to Bassie the singer. As much as I want my brand and my image to be more visible, I am still grateful for the love and support,” she added.

Bassie dropped her album Umculo in December and is hoping for a nomination at the Metro FM Music Awards, particularly for her collaboration track Kwelanga, featuring M-Touch and Ranger.

“This is why I’m crossing my fingers that Kwelanga makes it as one of the nominated songs at the awards. I want my music and my brand to be on a bigger level,” she said.

Despite her struggles with recognition, Bassie has found support in her relationship with fellow musician Pushkin RSA.

“The plan wasn’t to go public with our relationship, but he posted me first, and then I followed. We’ve been together for two years, and him being in the same industry helps because he understands the demands of this business,” she shared.

Although fan attention can sometimes be overwhelming, she says they have a solid understanding.

“We are planning to build a home, make money, and create a legacy together.”

Bassie remains focused on immortalizing her music, hoping that years from now, listeners will still be captivated by her sound.

The Metro FM Music Awards will take place on May 3 at Mbombela Stadium, with nominations set to be announced on February 27.
