Amapiano has become a dominant genre in South Africa and beyond, but what’s surprising is how many of its biggest stars initially started their careers in Hip-Hop. Here’s a look at five Amapiano artists who transitioned from rapping to becoming chart-topping stars in the genre.

1. Focalistic

Known as the “President Ya Straata,” Focalistic started his music career as a rapper, gaining recognition in 2016 with his single “Fak’mali”. His lyrical skills and energetic performances set him apart in the Hip-Hop scene. However, it was his Amapiano hit “Ke Star” that catapulted him to international fame. Blending his rap background with the unique rhythms of Amapiano, Focalistic has since become one of the genre’s global ambassadors.

2. Young Stunna

Before becoming a household name in Amapiano, Young Stunna was a budding Hip-Hop artist. His early work includes the 2018 single “Good Days Coming” with PDA. It wasn’t until his transition to Amapiano and the release of his smash hit “Adiwele” that his career skyrocketed. Young Stunna’s ability to infuse soulful melodies with his storytelling roots has solidified his place as a leading figure in the genre.

3. Sir Trill

Sir Trill began his journey in music as a rapper, often showcasing his talent in freestyle videos. His lyrical prowess was evident even as he transitioned into Amapiano, where he gained massive recognition. While continuing to dabble in Hip-Hop collaborations like “Photos” with Flex Rabannyan, it’s his Amapiano hits like “Izinyo Lami” that have earned him widespread acclaim.

4. Ch’cco

Ch’cco first made waves in the Hip-Hop scene, even appearing on platforms like Red Bull Bars to showcase his rapping skills with tracks like “Golden AF”. However, his career took a monumental turn with the release of “Nkao Tempela”, a song that became a cultural anthem. His seamless transition from rapping to Amapiano highlights his versatility as an artist.

5. Daliwonga

Daliwonga initially explored Hip-Hop before venturing into Amapiano. Releasing several singles early in his career, he eventually found his niche in 2019 when he embraced Amapiano with tracks like “Moya”. His smooth vocals and emotive delivery have since made him one of the genre’s most beloved artists.

These artists demonstrate the fluidity of South Africa’s music scene, proving that genre boundaries are meant to be broken. Their journeys from Hip-Hop to Amapiano showcase not only their versatility but also the power of evolution in creating timeless music.
