Major League DJz, the South African dynamic duo known for pushing boundaries in Amapiano, have hit another career milestone. The trailblazing twins were announced as Beatport’s Artists of the Month, solidifying their status as international influencers in the global dance music scene.
Beatport, one of the world’s leading platforms for electronic and house music, made the announcement on their social media channels, praising Major League DJz for their impact on Afro house and Amapiano. In their feature interview, the DJz opened up about their journey, their ambitions, and the evolution of Amapiano.
In the interview, Major League DJz shared their passion for Amapiano and their vision to expand its global reach. They emphasized their role in bridging the genre’s traditional South African roots with international house music scenes.
“Musically, we’re trying to find our space in global house music. We’re always looking at what’s happening,” they explained.
While Amapiano continues to dominate in South Africa as a staple of the country’s music culture, the DJz noted how its reception differs internationally. “Outside of South Africa, [Amapiano] is consumed like Afrobeats. So 2025 is going to be all about releasing African dance music and DJing 2 or 3 hour sets to bring that house influence back,” they said, hinting at exciting plans for the future.
The DJz also discussed their broader mission to elevate African music on the global stage, dubbing it “The African Dream.” They highlighted the shift in how Western audiences now consume African music, moving from passive listening to actively engaging with albums and live performances.
“Back in the day, [Western audiences] would listen to it, maybe on the radio, and move on. Now we want them to go through each song on the album, sing with us word for word at the shows. That’s the space Africans want to be in,” they said.
With accolades like this and their relentless drive to elevate Amapiano, Major League DJz continue to represent the vibrant and innovative spirit of African music. Their recognition as Beatport’s Artists of the Month marks another step in their journey to take Amapiano to even greater heights, blending Afro house, Amapiano, and African creativity for audiences worldwide.
