Renowned Amapiano producer DJ Maphorisa has sparked controversy after threatening to blacklist singer Samthing Soweto, accusing him of being difficult to work with. This follows allegations of exploitation that have surfaced regarding a song collaboration that failed to credit Samthing Soweto, causing tension between the two artists.
DJ Maphorisa, often referred to as “Porry,” took to social media in a heated rant, revealing his frustrations with Samthing Soweto. In one clip, shared by a Twitter (X) user MDN News, Maphorisa appeared to allude to blacklisting the singer, suggesting that he would block future opportunities for him in the industry. “We’ll see who’ll work with him,” Maphorisa said in the clip. “He’s just like Sir Trill; they plant rotten potatoes everywhere they go. They don’t know anything, and they’re not business-minded. Talent alone won’t help you, bro.”
Maphorisa’s comments didn’t stop at Samthing Soweto. He also drew comparisons between Samthing and Sir Trill, another artist who has previously accused him of exploitation. Maphorisa claimed both artists were notorious for their difficult behavior and blamed them for burning bridges in the music industry. According to the producer, Samthing Soweto’s supposed attitude and lack of business acumen had led to his marginalization, with others in the industry allegedly taking his style and replacing him.
The drama erupted after a song collaboration involving Maphorisa, Mas Musiq, and Samthing Soweto failed to properly credit the singer, prompting fans and industry insiders to question the dynamics behind the scenes. Many saw Maphorisa’s outburst as an attempt to shift blame and deflect from the exploitation allegations.
Mzansi, however, was quick to call out Maphorisa for his harsh words, labeling him as an “industry bully.” Fans and fellow artists expressed concerns about the power dynamics in the music industry, with some accusing Maphorisa of using his influence to shut out artists who challenge him or disagree with his methods.
The incident has reignited conversations about the treatment of artists in the South African music industry, particularly those who feel exploited or undervalued. For now, it remains unclear whether Samthing Soweto will respond publicly to the accusations, but the saga has highlighted the complex and often tense relationships behind the scenes in the Amapiano scene.
