Lethabo Sebetso a 28-year-old rapper, better known as Focalistic, has captivated audiences with his dynamic stage presence and infectious beats. However, behind the stage name lies a deeply personal story of self-discovery and growth. Reflecting on his journey, Focalistic reveals the inspiration behind his moniker and the symbiotic relationship between his real name and his alter ego. We discovered this as he had an interview with University of Pretoria alumni.
“Focalistic has been created by Lethabo,” he explains. “Focalistic is a place where I felt I could correct a lot of who I wanted to be, like a superhero.” For Focalistic, the stage name represents a “focused catalyst for change,” embodying his aspirations and vision for the future. He sees no distinction between Lethabo and Focalistic, emphasizing that both identities are integral to his journey through life. “Lethabo and Focalistic are helping each other to get through life,” he adds.
According to the UP Alumni, Focalistic’s love for rap music growing up in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, was ignited by the vibrant sounds of taxis and Toyota Quantums in his neighborhood. His musical journey began as a means of expression following the passing of his father during his teenage years.
“I started making music to express my feelings because words were not doing enough,” he recalls. Through melodies, Focalistic found a way to capture and convey his emotions, laying the foundation for his future as an artist.
Despite his success in the music industry, Focalistic remained grounded in his pursuit of education. Graduating with a degree in Political Sciences from the University of Pretoria in 2018, he views his academic background as an extension of his personality and artistic expression. “Musically, I wanted to explain the circumstances that we grow up in, and through this qualification, I am able to express my love for politics,” he explains to the UP Alumni.
His degree has equipped him with analytical skills that he applies to his music career and his role as the head of a record label. “I analyze the music that I write, the lyrics that I choose to release, and I am able to put that into a political mind frame,” he says.
Additionally, his education has instilled in him a sense of humility and a deeper understanding of societal dynamics. “The more educated you are, the humbler you become,” he reflects. “An ego blinds us from seeing the truth,” he concludes with the UP Alumni.
Focalistic’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of music and education. By embracing both aspects of his identity, he continues to inspire others with his music and his message of empowerment.
