In a groundbreaking moment at the 2024 Grammys, Johannesburg-born sensation Tyla emerged victorious, clinching the Grammy for Best African Music Performance in the category’s inaugural year. Despite facing stiff competition from ASAKE & Olamide, Burna Boy, Davido featuring Musa Keys, and Ayra Starr, Tyla’s exceptional talent and chart-topping single “Water” propelled her to success.

Tyla’s hit single reached remarkable heights, peaking at number 7 on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart just last month. The Johannesburg-born singer’s unique style and captivating performance undoubtedly contributed to her well-deserved win.

Accepting the award, Tyla expressed her disbelief and gratitude, stating, “I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important.” The acknowledgment reflects not only Tyla’s appreciation for the recognition but also the significance of the newly introduced category.

The category for Best African Music Performance stands out as one of three additions to the 2024 Grammys, underscoring the Recording Academy’s commitment to diversifying and recognizing excellence across a spectrum of musical genres. Tyla’s triumph marks a pivotal moment in her career, showcasing her as a rising star and affirming the global impact of African music.

As Tyla basks in the glory of her Grammy win, the music industry applauds the addition of these new categories, fostering inclusivity and spotlighting the rich diversity of talent worldwide. Tyla’s victory not only symbolizes personal achievement but also serves as a testament to the global influence and innovation present in African music.
