Caltonic SA On Producing ‘Champion Sound’ By Focalist And Davido. For the past two years, Caltonic SA has been refining and evolving his unique Amapiano style, honing his skill with hard-hitting drums that define his signature sound. His talent has been evident in the enduring popularity of his masterpiece single “Bambelela,” released three years ago, which remains a global Amapiano favourite, adored by both local and international DJs as an all-time club banger.
Caltonic SA also produced ‘Champion Sound’ hit track by Davido and Focalistic. Speaking to GQ about the experience, he said: “It was an amazing experience to produce a song for such greatness in the game. How the song came about is that I was called by Focalistic requesting me to send music since he was with Davido in studio at that time and they were jamming to one of my songs and they were blown away by the vibe.”
“Without wasting any time, I created couple of beats and send them, that’s how Champion Sound was born.We never got a chance to be in studio at the same time on Champion Sound, it was the matter of urgency driven by the energy at the time and we never wanted to allow it to cool down hence you can hear the same energy in Champion Sound,” he added.
In the four years since amapiano crossed over to Nigeria, it’s been co-opted at a prolific rate, with Davido being one of its more wholesome and exciting adopters. In early 2021, he collaborated with Focalistic and the continental hit remix of the SA rapper’s “Ke Star,” extending their working relationship to the instantly ubiquitous “Champion Sound,” which features as the closing song on Timeless. Across the album, sparkling piano chords and rattling log drums are employed, either as the core of the track (“FEEL”) or serving as embellishment to the gossamer feel of “IN THE GARDEN” or the konto groove of “PRECISION” — the former even features an adlib that references the 2022 ‘piano smash hit, “uMlando.”
