Focalistic Explains What Motivated Him To Study Political Science. Focalistic (real name Lethabo Sebetso) is arguably one of the top breakout African stars of the past two years, with a string of hits that have gone multiplatinum, epic collaborations with music industry heavyweights such as Davido and Cassper Nyovest.

Since he first burst onto the scene with his platinum-selling single “Ke Star”, the 27-year-old has been making major strides, not only in SA, but across the globe. The star is a Political Science graduate even though he is not pursuing music as his career.

“My dad was a journalist, and he studied political science, so, at 18, when I had to decide what I wanted to study at varsity, I chose that too. I knew I also wanted to make music. What’s great is that I’ve managed to use what I studied in my music; I’m also a journalist, only over a nice beat. I’m reporting on what’s happening in my life and other people, and that makes people dance,” he told GQ magazine.

He says he wants to be the greatest in Africa: “I always say that if I’m the greatest and you’re also in the room, you can be the greatest too. It’s about pushing excellence in the work I do, the quality of music we put out, our work ethic, performance and how we look. When I pull up, everything I bring to the table should say greatness. What I need to make clear is that the concept of greatness isn’t a competition.Great artists to have come before us, such as Angélique Kidjo, Fela Kuti and others, were all the best of their time. Successful without competing, they complemented each other’s greatness.”
