Amapiano’s deep house origins, intricate percussion patterns, jazzy keys and soulful vocals evoke all sorts of emotions on the dancefloor. Deep and expansive, it summons a playful energy, calling on skankface and whistle-like expressions among its faithful dancers. The genre has birthed the careers of many including Lethabo ‘LeeArt’ Gaulana.

Here are 5 facts about LeeArt:

  1. After matric, universities rejected her. None of the tertiary courses she applied for to please her mother, accepted her even with her good marks. But as soon as she started to steer the boat in the direction of what she desired the most, everything fell into place.

2. Being a DJ was never part of her plans, however she said she is proud of how far she has come in terms of taking up space and seizing the opportunities that have come her way.

3. Opportunities started knocking on her door during the Covid-19 lockdown in December 2021 when parties were hosted at private locations.Despite the entertainment industry being hit hard with restrictions on gatherings and alcohol, LeeArt would be booked from Thursday to Sunday.

4. The fast-rising DJ progressed to her third year of study at Boston Media house, until she couldn’t keep up anymore. When it was time to go back to school in February, “It didn’t work. The balance [between gigs and academic commitments] was not balancing anymore.”

5. Striking the iron while it’s hot, she became a resident DJ at Something Sosha Lounge and has since played her sets at events such as the MetroFm cruise party, and a few other events hosted by artists such as DJ Maphorisa.“The industry is fickle, it’s easy to be forgotten,” she keeps on saying, which is why she is doing her best to keep her name out there.
