Sithelo Shozi On How She Got #TheMaskedSingerSA Gig. She has gone from being known as Andile Mpisane’s baby mama to building a strong social media following and fanbase leading her to become one of the most sought after influencers. Sithelo didn’t stop there, she ventured into music and is one of the leading female Amapiano DJs in the country and now she’s a TV star.
Sithelo Shozi is one of the ‘detectives’ or judges of the new instant hit TV show franchise in SA, The Masked Singer. The show is about famous people singing whilst masked and the judges having to guess who they are. It makes sense Sithelo is on the panel alongside J Something, Somizi and Skhumba considering how social media enjoys her wit and how almost every phrase she comes up with becomes popular.
In her own words, Sithelo shared how she got her first TV gig and how she feels about this new step in her career as an all rounder entertainer. Speaking to DRUM, the DJ revealed Anele Mdoda, who is behind the show’s production, gave her a call soon after her return from her infamous Turkey trip. Anele reportedly asked Sithelo to watch the UK version of the hit show and later found out it was because Mdoda wanted her to be one of the detectives.
“Why did she think of me? I have never been on TV,” Sithelo reportedly asked upon finding out. She told DRUM how Anele told her this was her way of opening up the industry. “She said that she had been following me on social media for like four years and just watching how I move, what I say, what I put out, how I speak my truth and how I’m so bold about whatever it is I’m doing. She says that’s what she wanted and that she saw herself in me when she was my age and she’d like for me to grow as much as she’s grown in the industry,” Sithelo told DRUM.
The mom of three told the publication how being on the show still felt like an out of body experience as she didn’t expect her TV debut to be this soon. “…It’s also just so phenomenal, it’s a really beautiful journey and I could never take any of this for granted.”
