DJ Tira On Why He Embraces Amapiano. DJ Tira has been in the music industry for more than two decades. He has experienced success as one of the most influential artists from Durban.
When Amapiano started to become popular, there were a lot of debates on whether it would surpass SA Hip Hop and the Qgom genre which is popular in Durban. Now that it’s arguably the current leading music genre and export from South Africa, many artists have expressed how they feel about Amapiano.
Whilst some are hellbent on not embracing and supporting Amapiano, some have jumped on it and some artists are supportive and understanding of what era it is. DJ Tira recently shared where he stands as far as Amapiano is concerned. The Durban artist told DJs Naves and Sphectacula on their podcast that his decision to embrace Amapiano comes from understanding that times change.
“No, the time we were rocking with the gqom sound, especially with Durban kwaito before gqom came in, I never thought there could [be] a sound that would come in and overtake us. But as much as there was kwaito, there was Durban kwaito, then gqom. You need to understand in life things change, people’s taste changes and people love different things. You must show love because when we came in people left kwaito and supported us. So when piano comes in why are we going to hate piano? Because people gave us love when we came in, so nathi we must embrace piano and understand it, but also give it its space and we will continue doing our thing. It’s all about how you present your music,” he said.
Could this be a set up for DJ Tira dipping his toes into the Amapiano pond? Time will tell.
