Kamo Mphela On Why Amapiano Must Start Fusing The English Language. Kamo Mphela sings and dances her way into people’s hearts and she’s not about to stop. She’s already set her place amongst Amapiano stars and will be riding the wave of this brand new, innovative, and ever-growing genre as it takes the world by storm. It all began when the dancer caught the attention of fans with a viral video of her dancing on social media. She has since become an expert in dancing for Amapiano and other genres including Gqom, Kwaito, and Pantsula.
While acknowledging the origin of Amapiano as a home-grown South African sound, Mphela, one of the new wave of Gen Z African artistes spared some thoughts for her colleagues. ‘‘Apart from a few things, Amapiano must start fusing the English language. Afrobeats are significant because people can relate to the lyrics, and I think that’s probably what we need to do. We’re very Zulu, but our reach needs to be better – just a bit of English.”
People can still learn Zulu from Amapiano songs. Amapiano needs to be a little more. We’re a little too soft. ‘‘Amapiano in South Africa is about culture and being humble to everyone, but now if we want to take it to the world, we have to be more. Wizkid and Burna Boy aren’t soft about pushing Afrobeats and are aggressive. If we can be more aggressive with our sound, I think we can reach greater heights,” she told Premium Times.
Kamo has her whole life ahead of her. Nonetheless, the young dancer is already thinking about her future. She recently stated that apart from making dope Amapiano hits, she also wants to explore fashion design and have her own clothing line and shoe store. This makes sense as the singer is always on fleek on her social media posts with her ever-changing but very stylish looks. She also expressed her interest in starting a hair business but we’ll have to wait and see if she actually goes through with it.
