5 Things You Should Know About Amapiano Star Skhiya. The music industry has changed dramatically over the last decade, following the popularity of amapiano. Record sales have plummeted and the way people listen to music has shifted. Artists rely heavily on streaming services and social media to promote their music. Some have found success in this new landscape, while some are still figuring it out.

Here are 5 facts about Skhiya:

1 Skhiya’s real name is Thato Mapalakanye.

2 He developed a passion for music at the age of nine when he used to listen to old kwaito cassette tapes with his now-deceased brother Mpho Kobane, also known as Khabzela. He hosted events that the young Skhiya attended, and later became fascinated by the entertainment industry.

3 He started pursuing his musical journey in high school where he was part of a trio call Something Fresh but later became a solo artist.

4 The 26-year-old former Inqayizivele Secondary School learner was originally a hip-hop artist but decided to venture out. “Ampaiano is a South African genre and I have always been influenced by local music.“I believe amapiano is the biggest music genre in our country at the moment and is quite evident from the songs topping radio and streaming charts. Local artists are able to go international with this sound.”

5 Throughout his musical journey, he has managed to perform at prestigious events namely Zone 6, Tanzania, Gipa Sundays and Sneakers and Shades to name a few.He has shared stages with the likes of Kabza de Small, Emtee, Chicco, DBN Gogo, K-Zaka, EmjaykeyzDJ and many more.
