Watch! Tyler ICU Explains How He Quit His 9-5 For A Studio Session With Maphorisa. Tyler ICU is a South African musician and record producer who has produced a number of hit tracks, in different genres, although he’s now known as the amapiano mainstay. Having produced and worked on a dozen songs, Tyler ICU officially landed his first amapiano hit in 2021 alongside DJ Maphorisa titled ‘Banyana’, that made the yanos fans finally recognise him.
Tyler is signed under DJ Maphorisa’s Blaqboy Music says that working with artists such as Maphorisa is a very good experience and learning curve for him when it comes to the mastering of his craft. Speaking on how he met Maphorisa, the star explained that he quit his job for a studio session with Maphorisa.
“I hooked up with Phori when we did the alvums, we dropped one song called Hookah, sop when the track came up i got a lot of support from the coimmunity. So i knew Vyno and he happens to know a lot of people so he kind of like sending songs to everyone including Maphorisa. So when he listed to the beat, he said I need to come through but on that day, I had to go to work. I said my friends can go and if he still needs more beats, I’ll send them while at work. So when my crew got there, they told him I was missing. So i was asked to send more beats, and he took one beat and that song made it to his album,” he said.
“I remember one day when Phori called me to come to the studio and i had just arrived at work, I was working as a security guardm, so when he said i should come i left and resigned my job right then and there. Plus i was also tired of working 9-5,” he added.
Tyler said that Dr. Dre got him interested in doing music in general because he was the leading producer in 2002 and 2003. “I started exploring with beats when I was about 10-years old and that’s when I got my first computer. When I was 15 years old I started to make the work more professionally,” he said.
His advice for upcoming artists is that they should keep working as hard as they can and never ruin relationships. “One of the things that I’ve learned in the industry is never ruining relationships. Also keep working, never stop or go by season,” he told MGOSI publication.
