The music genre, which originated between the townships of Pretoria and Johannesburg around 2012, has gained international audiences across the globe through artists such as Major League DJs, Scorpion Kings, DBN Gogo and more. Per Beat Portal, the genre began as a byproduct of manipulating house tracks by slowing them down.
