Watch! DJ Maphorisa Reveals Who He Took “Emcimbini” Hit Song From. Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, known professionally as DJ Maphorisa, is a South African record producer, DJ and vocalist. Maphorisa first shot to fame in 2013 as part of the multifarious musical group, Uhuru. The group blew up off the anthemic Y-Tjukutja in 2013, which owned the summer. That same year, Uhuru further enhanced its reputation by producing and featuring on Mafikizolo’s chart-topping, multi award-winning hit single, Khona.

His genre of music is Amapiano, although he first ventured into Gqom, but due to the Durban producer’s calling him out for doing a genre that wasn’t from his town, he decided to major in Amapiano. One of his first amapiano hits he released at the time amapiano had just gained it’s popularity is titled ‘Emcimbini’. The song made headlines and probably made most people love the genre even more. It features Kabza De Small and Aymos Shili. Maphorisa took to Instagram live to reveal that he took the song from Mas Musiq, stating that it it because Mas Musiq was selfie.

Aymos has been one of amapiano’s most prominent vocalists, appearing on hits such as eMcimbini by Scorpion Kings (the super duo Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa). Since 2019’s Scorpion Kings, the colossal amapiano album that introduced us to his musical partnership with amapiano pioneer Kabza De Small, Maphorisa has been releasing quality music at a frantic pace. His foray into amapiano has been nothing short of spectacular. The ease with which he’s made the transition is unsurprising. After all, this is the same guy who’s produced hits across several genres for artists like Kwesta (Ngud), Busiswa (Lahla), Professor (Jezebel), Shekinah (Suited) and Zingah (Dlala).

Together with Kabza, he’s pioneered an unusual way of releasing music where they “leak” unreleased music on blogs and file sharing platforms like Datafilehost, then only once the music has been embraced by the masses do they put it out on streaming platforms. It helps them figure out what songs are worth a concerted push and investment. That’s how songs such as Bopha and Adiwele, two of the year’s biggest hits, took off.Story
