Scorpion Kings Open Up About Their Much Anticipated 6 Hour Set At Sonar. Before teaming up for their debut collaborative record ‘Scorpion Kings’ in 2019, both DJ Maphorisa and Kabza de Small were already being heralded as “godfathers” of the amapiano genre. Maphorisa had been honing in his craft for a decade before the release of his debut solo single: the genre-defining ‘Midnight Starring’ in 2018.
When speaking on their much anticipated 6 hours set at Sonar, the duo said they are very excited about it. “Yeah, we rocking a full six-hour set, it’s a first time for us both. We are really excited about this set. People should really expect a spectacular amapiano journey, of music that is released and definitely unreleased. It’s going to be one for the books.”
Kabza: “Six hours is a long time, but I’m up for it. It’s really going to be a showcase of what the genre is all about. A mixture of all the subgenres. A musical trans definitely. It’s a not to miss definitely.”
The duo played a 6 hour set in Barcelona about a week ago. Videos circulating online show the duo playing in front of a packed-out venue with festival-goers soaking in their set, which ranged from amapiano to electro dance to house. Their show was part of the Sónar music festival, which was the first leg of DJ Maphorisa’s European tour. His next stop is Brussels before he jets off to Netherlands, Croatia, Denmark and Portugal.
A few weeks ago, Kabza released his eagerly anticipated album “KOA (King of Amapiano) II Pt 1”. The star-studded album features the likes of Young Stunna, Daliwonga, Msaki, Ami Faku, Lady Du and Nkosazana Daughter. Since its release the album has been featured on a billboard in Times Square, New York and several of the songs on the album feature among the most played songs in the country on both Spotify and Apple Music.“KOA II Billboard in Times Square, New York.
