DJ Jawz Opens Up About His US Tour And His Decision To Play Amapiano Overseas. Though he has been active in South African hip-hop circles since the 2000s, DJ Jawz (born Itumeleng Sebola in 1981) doesn’t limit himself to one specific category. This can be partly attributed to influences such as DJ Fresh, DJ Christos and Oskido, who laid the foundation for house, electro and kwaito in South Africa.
The musician, whose real name is Itumeleng Sebola, left Mzansi yesterday, 2 June, to start his USA tour, which will see him perform amapiano in the US for the whole of this month.
The 40-year-old from Seshego, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, said: “I chose the USA as amapiano has just infiltrated the market there and is growing quickly..There’s a lot of interest in the culture, so I had to step in and play my part in the growth of South African music.”
DJ Jawz has performed in the USA before, as well as Paris, London, Zanzibar and Mauritius. He said he’s been looking forward to this tour since he performed in New York and Los Angeles last year. “The people appreciated our amapiano sound. I had to go back and give them a proper show again. One of the singles to look out for is Dubai, from my new EP, Dondo. We’ve also shot the music video for Ngeke Ngivume,” he told Daily Sun.
