Maphorisa Reflects On How Africa Is Benefiting From Amapiano. Themba Marabi Sekowe, known professionally as DJ Maphorisa, is a South African record producer, DJ and vocalist. Maphorisa, who’s long earned his belt for pumping out hits for almost a decade has become a pioneer of the biggest genre in South Africa right now, namely amapiano.

Observing the way people have embraced the sound, including musicians from other countries, Phori took to Facebook to share his thought. The South African DJ said he’s excited other musicians are making money from Amapiano music, as that has been a dream of the DJ alongside other Amapiano music artists. “Now africa is eating from Amapiano this is BIG, very spiritual we all eating gerrit,” he wrote.

Speaking on what motivated him to invest in amapiano, the star said: “With my gigs, I wanted to understand people’s reactions to this new sound because amapiano was underground. What really sparked my interest in the genre was that, at the time, I was looking to get into something that originated in South Africa. Amapiano is part of kwaito and dance music. When I started working with Afrobeats, which hails from Western Africa, I felt that we didn’t have a sound that strongly represented South Africa. When I started paying close attention to amapiano, I knew that this was a sound that would take South Africa to the world. There’s a lot that you can do with amapiano — you can make it soulful, funky, dusty and hard or jazz it up.”

DJ Maphorisa says even though he’s making a lot of money, there’s always room for more.“Yes, I’m making a lot of money, but I believe that I can make more with the current moves that I’m making. There’s a lot of money to be made in this genre, but some artists are stuck in their own ways and they don’t want to explore,” he said.
