JazziQ On How He Met Mpura. Mr JazziQ first emerged as one-half of JazziDisciples, a South African DJ/producer duo which released a slate of projects that played an important role in Amapiano’s rapid journey from the township into the heart of the mainstream. And now, in 2021, Tumelo Manyoni has his eyes on a bigger prize: using his homegrown success to take over the global music scene. Specifically, he wants to turn his label, Black is Brown Entertainment into the biggest label in the world.
JazziQ and Mpura met a long time ago, and have been friends ever since. Although JazziQ is from Soweto and Mpura being from Alexander, their paths met in high school. “When I got expelled from Crawford Sandton, I had to sort of like downgrade and also my parents were tired of taking me to all these private schools and paying so much money for me to just be an a**h*le. I had to lower my standards, and go to an old boy school and that was the only one that could take me. That’s where and when I met Mpura,” JazziQ explains.
“At the time, Mpura was called Material Sjeso [they both laugh]. That’s when I met this broer of mine, I took care of him, cause I was like the guy, you know… So during lunch he’d come to me, and his English was not that good, so I had to teach him [they all laugh again]. But now, he’s polished up,” JazziQ adds.
Mpura on the other hand has been one of the fastest rising SA hit makers, and despite being less than a year in the industry he has featured on countless hit tracks. The star has so far worked with JazziQ, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small, Busta 929, Lady Du, Vetkuk vs Mahoota, and counting.
