Here’s Why Kwiish SA Abandoned Secondary School In Grade 10. Lehlohonolo Marota who is popularly known as Kwiish SA is a South African DJ and music producer who rose to fame following his hit track – iSkhathi. ‘iSkhathi’ was well received by fans and went on to top charts as well as taking over down dance floors across South Africa. Thus garnering the nickname Gong Gong due to its distinctive woodblock kick. The success of “Gong Gong” saw Kwiish travelling internationally and take Amapiano abroad.
Ironically, it was his father’s (former-professional-footballer) decision to open a chillas (pub) which led to Kwiish abandoning his secondary schooling in grade 10 to pursue music- a decision which naturally raised the father’s ire. That was how, where and when his music career began. When sound equipment was stored at his home after pub nights, Kwiish would fiddle with them, trying to play what he had witnessed. A local DJ and friend, Soso, then tutored him in DJing, and when he was confident enough, Kwiish SA entered the fray of local Amapiano DJs vying for a set at any chillas they could get to.
Kwiish then fell out with his former booking agency when he accepted performance bookings outside of the exclusive contract that he had signed. “When you have management, your gigs decrease because you are more strict with payment,” he said.
He recently dropped another hit song titled Sondela which is a Zulu/Xhosa word for “come closer” and the track has diverted from the sound that Mzansi has come to associate with Kwiish SA. He took a quick short left with this one as it is a much calmer track which is in line with the newer sounds that Amapiano artists have been unleashing and exploring lately. Sondela features a very soulful undertone that is slightly uncharacteristic for that genre and at the same time it is highly fitting. With all the changes to the genre is currently undergoing, the track is still a clear Amapiano tune in its arrangement and delivery.
