Nota Explains Why He Doesn’t Believe Black Coffee Supports Amapiano. South African cultural commentator and music industry insider Nota Baloyi has once again came out guns blazing with his industry opinion. This time he made comments regarding the current biggest sub-gene, amapiano.
Nota has explained why he doesn’t believe Black Coffee supports amapiano the way he claims he does. Nota said Coffee has never been witness nor is there proof of Coffee playing amapiano on one of his international platforms. “When it comes to amapiano, is he supporting amapiano? Have y seen any visible support for amapiano from Coffee?” asks Nota. “When it comes to Jerusalema, it is the biggest song to ever come out of South Africa, but when someone asked him to play Jerusalema, since he is from South Africa, he sent a picture back home to say they want him to play Jerusalema, I want him to send proof of himself playing Jerusalema. It’s because you know, when you are Black Coffee and have an international platform, and play Jerusalema, they’re gonna book Master KG next because he’s the one with the song they love. He only sent the picture to make himself look good, he must make it look good out there, where he’s got a platform, in Europe,” he explained.
Black Coffee recently posted while in America, that a fan asked him to play amapiano. Although the viral video of a an amapiano dancer at his gig in Houton emerged, the song the DJ was playing was not an amapiano song. However, he also participated on the viral #Dakiwechallenge on his latest social VR Sensoium Galaxy.
In 2019, internationally-renowned producer and DJ Black Coffee came in defence of Pretoria’s amapiano genre against a fellow international producer, Lars Behrenroth. This came after German-born and American-based House music DJ, Lars took to Twitter sharing his unpopular opinion about amapiano. ““Finally checked it out for the first time and all I can say is #Amapiano & “Godfa!^&#$ Of Deep House” = same WhatsApp group .. What a snoozefest,” he said.
The controversial tweet has seen Lars spend his entire weekend defending himself against critics. He also wrote: “We all have a variety in taste. That’s why it’s subjective… I don’t think it’s unfair at all for me to state my opinion, especially when people keep asking me whether I like it. Until today I never heard it but now I can safely answer the question with no.”
In defence of amapiano, Black Coeffe wrote a coupe of tweets, one of them reads: “True…but 1st understand the culture of the Country and what music does to change the lives of its people no matter what genre…u can’t just tweet people’s careers away in a glass house in California that the same people help you to build. Exploit us but please Respect us too.”
DJ Lars later apologised for his tweet. See post:
