Maphorisa Explains Why He Prefers Dj’ing Over Producing. When amapiano was first introduced, not most could see it taking over in the local airwaves for a long time like it did till date. The sub-genre is hailed as a hybrid of deep house, jazz and lounge music characterised by synths, airy pads and bass-lines. The likes of Maphorisa jumped on the fastest growing sound in the early stage, to revolutionise the sound and experiment more beats and instruments. He is now the pioneer of amapiano.

Some believe the wave that started when amapiano was becoming popular and the ‘it thing’, Scorpion Kings consisting of Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, completely popularised the sound. In 2020, Maphorisa and Kabza both released about 6 albums in the space of 6 to 12 months. However, Maphorisa revealed that he prefers DJ’ing over producing music. “Music producing and DJing both go together but DJ’ing is hand to mouth. DJ is better because you get the money now. While producing you have to wait for you guys to buy it and you also wait for royalties. DJ is also better because of the excitement of playing new songs,” he said.

The star toured African countries and countries outside Africa playing their music and introducing the sound to people outside Africa. The international likes of Usher, Diddy, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz were seen vining to amapiano, making a realisation to amapiano artists that the sound has indeed entered the international airwaves.

Amapiano keen ears in other countries say there is a curiosity and thirst to explore the amapiano culture, and with that being amapiano is only growing as a result of exactly that. “If bad news travels fast, good music travels even faster. Today, There is a certain rise of consciousness from people in the European continent who want to hear more about where Africans come from, through amapiano music.
