Some believe the wave that started when amapiano was becoming popular and the ‘it thing’, Scorpion Kings consisting of Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, completely popularised the sound. In 2020, Maphorisa and Kabza both released about 6 albums in the space of 6 to 12 months. However, Maphorisa revealed that he prefers DJ’ing over producing music. “Music producing and DJing both go together but DJ’ing is hand to mouth. DJ is better because you get the money now. While producing you have to wait for you guys to buy it and you also wait for royalties. DJ is also better because of the excitement of playing new songs,” he said.
The star toured African countries and countries outside Africa playing their music and introducing the sound to people outside Africa. The international likes of Usher, Diddy, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz were seen vining to amapiano, making a realisation to amapiano artists that the sound has indeed entered the international airwaves.
